week one: mercantilism and fiona halls work

1. First define mercantilism, using material from your ALVC handbook, and explain how it has developed since the Renaissance.
Mercantilism is the economic system of foreign trade throughout the nations during the 16th,17th and late 18th century. Mercantilism has evolved since the Renaissance. In culture today individuals are measured by how much money the individual owns instead of how much valuable metals one has such as gold and silver.

2. Identify the ideas or concepts in Hall's work that relate to Mercantilism?
Hall's idea was to show the complex intersections between the natural world and human systems. This was shown through shredding thousands of US dollars and weaving them all into 86 bird nests. The main idea is to show that nature and money are somehow linked and this shows that culture today has become modernized. Hall has duplicated US dollars various times to show that nature is just as important as money in todays society.

3. For each work describe the shape, form and materials used, and also explain the ideas behind each example.

Hall has designed many bird nests and specified what species lives in each one. The shape has been made to look very realistic. The nests have been made out of many duplicated shredded US dollars.

4. In your opinion do the materials communicate the ideas of the work? Please explain your answer.
I think it is such a creative way to communicate the idea. I do beleive that the idea was communicated clearly and has shown me that nature is just as important as money.

5. Fiona Hall's recent project The Kermadecs focuses on issues around the Pacific ocean. Research this project to summarize the importance of the area and upload an image to your blog for discussion.

  1. Hi Amelia.
I like your explanations of “Mercantilism”. As you said, Mercantilism has evolved since the Renaissance. It is a kind of economic system prevalent in some Western Europe countries during that time. What is more, you said in recent years, people always regard money as assessment of the social status, instead of the valuable metals, such as gold and silver. I agree with you. Since vast majority of people do not have gold or silver. Money has become the popular and directly tool to measure your wealthy in the world

  2. Hi,
I enjoyed reading your explanation on how Halls ideas relate to Mercantilism. It is an interesting way of making artwork, using dollar bills as material to make nests, and how the materials and subjects together create a message about how the natural world and money are connected.
